The power of the sea - Virkie beach

Spent a very windy few hours at the beach at Virkie (sound end of the mainland) today. Conditions proved a little difficult though as we were nearly blown over several times! Still, it made for some lovely photos as the waves were crashing down around us (although, I lost count of the amount of times I had to wipe my lense and all I could taste was salt on my way back home again). The most amazing thing I found about our time here today was the SOUND that surrounded us during the shoot - a constant rumble of thunder coming from the beach. It took me a moment to figure out what was causing this, until I realised that the sea was physically lifing the smaller rocks and bashing them on top of each other as it moved in and out. It was actually making a pattern along the edge where it was reaching up. Its not uncommon for places in Shetland to be shut off due to the sea lifting rocks up and chucking them over the edge (the road past Fjara cafe in Lerwick had to be closed not that long ago due to the waves taking over!). I took a video to try and let you all hear the noise, although the wind is the most prominent thing in it unfortunately! You get the idea though and if you listen carefully, you might just catch a moment of the loud thunderous rocks we came across this day!
