Travelling with a pet!

Travelling by plane with your dog is a popular choice for many people as the journey time is greatly reduced! For this reason, I would really reccommend booking your holiday well in advance to avoid disappointment (plus, you'll find your fare to be much cheaper). To book your dog on the plane, you must firstly ensure that you have a travel container which meets Loganair's requirements - one of this is that the cage must be IATA approved. You must then book yourself on the plane before phoning Loganair reservations on 0844 800 2855 (remember to have your Flybe booking number at hand as you will need this to book your dog on board). NOTE: there is limited space available provided for dogs on Flybe flights. You may wish to phone Loganair reservations FIRST to ensure there is a place for your dog before booking your flight and then securing your pets travel arrangements. There is a £10 charge for putting your dog on board a flight as they are counted as "additional baggage".

On your day of travel, you must take your dog and the container to the check in desk with you where they will be weighed and checked in as baggage. Your dog will have to go through security before being placed in the baggage hold.

Below is a PDF stating information on Loganair's travel requirements. Please download and read this before purchasing a container to ensure you get the right one!

With its great walking routes filled with gorgeous scenery to its friendly dog loving locals, Shetland is a great place to have your four legged friend by your side! However, getting them here can prove to be a challenge if you havent done it before. Here, I will help to provide you with the information you need to travel with your dog. If you are coming from within the UK, then you should have very few difficulties providing you follow the rules of the travel providers (i.e. your dog is in a suitable container for travel). However, those coming from other reigons will have to include a Pet passport and other certificates to allow them passge into the UK. I reccommend talking to a specialised pet travel company if you plan to do this as it can become very complicated!

Travelling by boat

Travelling by plane

Travelling with your dog by boat is a pretty simple procedure. The best way to book your journey is online - follow the steps via the booking page on the website and when it comes to the "Extras" page, scroll down and select the size of kennel you require for your dog to comfortabley travel. Prices for each kennel range from £7.35 - £9.80 one way. NOTE: you must book one of these for your pet to travel in! Dogs are not allowed on deck or in your cabin during sailing.

This is something you may want to considder if you decide to travel via this route with your pet... Remember, the journey from Aberdeen to Shetland is normally 14 hours long (on a day with good weather!) and your furry friend will spend most of this time locked in what can be a noisy kennel in the lower decks of the boat. You are allowed to check on them at points during your journey, but this is only with permission from the deck crew.

I strongly advise that you read the information with regards to pet travel via the Northlink website before booking them on.
