Now I know...

For those of you who have visited Shetland, you will have noticed several wooden signs dotted along the island. These are wonderful, magical little markers which direct those curios enough to a "place of interest" somewhere, sometimes in the back of beyond (the one at Noness cliffs in particular lead us away for ages!). The result of following one of these is usually awe inspiring views or finding an insteresting piece of history. For many years I have passed one that sits just beyond Dunrossness on my way to the airport and it has always made my mind wander... could it lead to the beautiful cliffs beyond the horizon? Maybe to a secluded beach that not many people knew about? Today, I decided to quench my thirst for this knowlege and finally go to this mysterious spot. Upon my arrival, I found that the sign read "Huesbrek Loch" - wonderful! A nice big loch, maybe even containing another historical structure in the middle of it like the one at Brindister. We followed a rather muddy path - our route being very closely observed by the local sheep - until we happened to stumble upon our destination only 5 minutes down the road. Needless to say, I was a little disappointed! My eyes were met by a small loch with a few uninterested Maali birds (or Fulmers as they are formally known) floating on the surface and a view which was ruined by a water pump house. It was an ok walk and certainly allowed us time to stretch our legs before heading back to Baggend again at least. What can I say? Many years I have passed that sign in wonder... now I know!
