NORTHMAVINE

Northmavine

Welcome to Northmavine!

This is the most northern part of Shetland's mainland and contains the villages and areas of Hillswick, Eshaness, Ollaberry and North Roe. Northmavine can almost be seen as an island on its own, separated by a narrow piece of land known as Mavis Grind. With so much to do and see in this area, you would need to set by at least a couple of days to explore it all! The views are absolutely breath taking around here and certainly not to be missed.

NOTE: Northmavine comes from the old Norse "Norðan Mæfeið", meaning ‘the land north of the Mavis Grind’

Seals and Otters are common residents here, but they have also had a 7 ft leatherback turtle from the caribbean come through the doors!

In order to help with funding, the sanctuary operates a lovely little cafe which used to be Shetland's oldest pub! This is open at weekends from 11am - 5pm and is the perfect place to relax for a bit before setting off again.  It also gives you a true feel for what Shetland life used to be like as they have managed to keep the authentic historical look of the place.
