NAME: Voxter

LOCATION: Trondavoe (Between Brae and Scatsta)

DESCRIPTION: The woods at Voxter features a small dense area of trees which is fun to go and explore, although there is not much of a path through them leaving you to make your own way around. The area is pretty dark and mysterious due to the lack of light being allowed through however, this does make it the perfect location for a bit of hide and seek (especially if you're a fairy... check out voxter woods in the "Folklore" section!). Parking is available and there is plenty of spaces in amonst the trees for a pic-nic (you may also want to keep an eye out for some of the little tree houses and hamoks that the locals like to make around here). The name "Voxter" means "a good place for growing" and Voxter house (along with the surrounding area) is often used for outdoor leasure activities such as kayaking and team building exercises.

NAME: Lea Gardens

LOCATION: Trondra (WEST MAINLAND)

DESCRIPTION:  Located on the sunny west side of Shetland, Lea Gardens is a simply beautiful location filled with serenity. It’s clear to see the amount of hard work and love dedicated to this location which stretches over a distance of almost two acres, containing a wide range of around 1500 species of plants from all over the world. Not only has it been listed as an official member of "Scotland's Gardens", it was also winner of the "Shetland Environmental Award" in 2011 and featured on the TV series "Britton’s Best Back Gardens" hosted by Alan Titchmarsh in 2015. The owners have boasted how their gardens have not only attracted tourists from around the world, but also provided education to local schools on the protection and care of plants and our environment. This is an absolute must see location for any passionate gardener and you can even buy your own in the plant sales right next to the gardens (follow the wooden sign!).

NOTE: As mentioned previously, there has been a lot of hard work and dedication placed into this location and understandably, the owners are very protective of their pride and joy. Needless to say, they are not keen on dogs trampling all over their bed plants! We were allowed into this location under special permission to take photos and promote this wonderful place - please respect that they may not want your dog around the area. However, if you must have your "dog fix" and desperately want to see the plants then there's good news! The gardens are home to two gorgeous, very friendly border collies which I was lucky to get a cuddle from. Lovely location and local dogs – what’s not to love?

NAME: Sullom Woods

LOCATION: Sullom (NORTH MAINLAND)

DESCRIPTION: A small fenced off strectch of trees great for getting lost in! There isnt much of a track left amoungst the heavy layer of foliage on the ground, leaving you to find your own way through the thick gathering of trees. However, still a lovely, quiet place to take your dog and certainly good fun!

NAME: Sand Gardens

LOCATION: Sand (WEST MAINLAND)

DESCRIPTION: Superb seven achres of both woodland and garden to explore! The area has been lovingly developed by passionate locals from a place of plane grazing land, to a space which encorporates both rare and beautiful plants. Oh, and before you leave - remember this give them a wee donation to show your appriciation of this wonderful project.
